The Boston Terrier (also called the "American Gentleman") is a non-sporting dog. They have a brindle, seal or black coat with white markings. It was in the 1800s the breed is thought to have first came to be. They were originally raised for acting as a show dog. They are a common selection as a companion breed for families or allergy sufferers nowadays. Features such as their playful and well-mannered temperament are what they are characterized by. The breed is assumed to have appeared in Boston and their earlier ancestors are English Terriers, the Bulldog and French Bulldog.
They are classed as a small sized breed. The official male and female dimensions are 15-17 inches tall and a weight of 15-25 pounds. They're well-known for their friendly, gentle and well-mannered temperament. They're mostly reserved (but quickly become friendly) with people they're not familiar with, and this can mean they are unsuitable as a protection dog. The breed ranks 54th compared to all other breeds when being trained to understand new instructions, and are recognized as being fairly intelligent.
They're great towards children, which can mean they are suitable as a family pet. Other animals like other dogs and pets do combine well with them. Grooming them is a simple assignment. They demand occasional brushing of their coat every week or so, and proper grooming once every month or two. They can very easily be suited to staying in an apartment, but enjoy having a small (though don't really need one) yard so they have plenty of room.
They are for the most part longer-lived, as with the majority of small sized dog breeds, with an expected life of 10-14 years. Their most common health problem is cataracts or other eye problems, and they are also susceptible to deafness, breathing difficulties, sensitivity to hot and cold or allergies. They have fun doing activities such as play sessions or indoor games of fetch. They call for long walks each day to reduce the risk of hyperactivity or other destructive behavior because of their moderate to high amount of energy.
If you own the Boston Terrier you need to be able to give them plenty of exercise and attention. They are not an ideal choice for a guard dog, but highly suitable for active owners, apartment dwellers or families. Perhaps the greatest reason why dog owners find this dog so appealing is it is one of the best companion dogs due to its amazingly gentle nature. One of the other reasons dog lovers find them appealing is they are hypoallergenic and a great choice for people who suffer from dog allergies.
