Animals are not given the facility of speech, but they are gifted with large, bulging and expressive eyes through which they speak love that is all unconditional. Dogs are the favourite animal for any human; you can see a pet dog in almost every home. Loving and obedient pets add grace to the house and relief to the inhabitants. So, let's learn how to train a dog.

Before we talk about dog training basics, there are some important things to be kept in mind while you go to buy a dog for yourself:-

Don't choose a dog that appears cute or funny to you. Once you pick it, you are going have a 15-18 yrs relationship with it. So, think about the level of activity in your life, and then pick the breed whose temperament and need for activity which matches your lifestyle.Give your dog a name that is not too long and fancy and sounds simple and easy. Spell out the name of the pet as often as you could and more while you train him or her.If you are training your dog, then do share the training methods and rules with other members of your family so that the commands remain consistent, and the pet doesn't get confused.

Communication and understanding with your pet is necessary otherwise the love and comfort will be lacking. So, pat your pet often and talk to him just like you talk to your friends. He may not understand you at first, but soon you will have forged a deep bond with your pet.

Dog Training Basics

Dogs and puppy obedience crate and potty training go hand in hand; fact is that crate is a mandatory tool for the potty training of dog.

Crate training is teaching your pet by being confined in a cage or kennel (known as crate) when he is not under your eyes. It also avoids him against his natural instincts of soiling where he sleeps. Dogs have a 'denning instinct' and so they feel safe and secure in small places; the pets enjoy sleeping inside the crates. When your pet is a puppy, keep the crate very small so that they could not relieve themselves in it. When they grow up, make a crate that is as bigr their size and is close to family. Train the pet by putting him in crate for few minutes several times a day and then let him out. Gradually increase the time, until he is assured of his sleeping place and that he will come out when in need to pee and poop or eat food.

Potty training needs consistency and regularity. After you get your dog perfectly crate trained, next comes keeping him on a good schedule. Take him out on regular trips and allow him a chance to release in his potty area. Know your pet that how frequently he will require the potty trip. Mostly dogs need to eliminate after they have their food; with time you will get to know their pees and poos habit. Every time as your dog releases, pat him lovingly, praise him and this will encourage him do the same on habit.

It is also important to let your dog know when he has done wrong. So, have a light stick with you all the time. You can roll a piece of newspaper and make a stick out of it. Strike on him lightly with this stick every time he misses the right step, and he will know that something has gone wrong.

The best advantage of keeping a dog is that with time you get to have an open heart full of love and compassion; increasingly you become empathic and receptive to love. So, have a pet and practice love and compassion with him which is little hard with humans. J

How to Make Dog Steps at Home

Whether your pet dog is growing old or is injured, dog walk will help them in a variety of ways. Having dog steps in your house brings a lot of benefits for you and your pet. First, the steps help your pet to get in and out of your car. It can also prevent fall-related injuries to your pet. There are available dog steps for bed or couch in the market, but this project can be done in your home, without spending too much money.

Below are the tips on how to do simple steps for dogs.

Make sure your workplace has a flat surface. Prepare your workplace by spreading old newspapers on the surface. This preparation will help you clean up faster after the project is done.Prepare these materials: Polystyrene foam (Styrofoam), aerosol spray, paint, glue, staple gun, ruler, and a knife. The Styrofoam will be the flooring for your pet. Lay the foam on the surface and cut it with a utility knife. The largest block should measure 6 in. tall, 18 in. long and 12 in. wide. The middle step should be 6x12x12 and the last step will measure 6x8x12. The 12 inch width is good for smaller dogs. Larger dogs require a width of 16-18 inches. The next step would be to attach the steps together. Put the largest block on the surface and cover the top with glue. Place the middle block on top. Line the edges to form a step. Put the smallest block on top of the middle block to form a three-feet set.Paint the steps with your desired color. Do not use paint with petroleum, to avoid melting the Styrofoam. Wait until the paint is completely dried. If you opt not to use paint, you can choose to cover the steps with fabric or carpeting. You can make a removable cover from washable fabrics, so that it would be easier to clean.Give the steps a sturdy grip by spraying non-skid aerosol. Do this step only when the paint has already dried out.

You can now use your dog steps. Position it near the couch to help your pet get to higher surfaces. Because the steps are made out Styrofoam, you can easily transport it with you when you go out with your pet. You can use it when you go to the park, the vet, or to the grooming center.

These are the simple steps to make this project. If you do possess carpentry skills, you can build dog steps using wood planks or some plywood. This will create a sturdier dog steps for bed and is a better option, especially when your pet is a bit heavy.

Tips for Puppy House and Crate Training

Crates serve as very helpful tool while introducing a new puppy into your household. Remember, a crate means temporal stay; it is not long hours confinement. Also confinement is not crate training. Puppies do not like to soil the area where they sleep or rest; they go over to some far area and relieve themselves. Crate is also useful in managing and training your dog till the time he knows the exact place to roam and relieve and you know the schedule of his bowel movements. Crate should be of a normal size where your puppy can sit comfortably, can stand and easily turn around. But it should not be that big that he relieves himself on one corner of crate and sleeps in other corner. It should be designated for just resting or sleeping periods of dog.

When you first time bring the puppy into the house, show him the entire house, give him some water and then gently put him inside the crate. Putting your puppy in a crate helps estimating when he needs to eliminate. Usually dogs make noises when they need to poop or pee, so this can also tell you in advance about their need to eliminate. If the puppy has been put in crate overnight or even a few hours at length, then definitely he will relieve himself moments after you take him out of crate. So, the biggest advantage of crate is that you can prevent the pup from eliminating indoors and also having a free run around the home.

Dog owners often face the problem where they get confused regarding their pet's eliminating habit; usually such untrained dogs pee and poop just anywhere and everywhere inside the home. So, it's mandatory to crate train him before you let him have a free run around house. Here are few steps which you need to take:-

Dogs don't know what is right and wrong; they only are aware of what's safe and what's dangerous. So, they will never know if urinating or defecating inside house is wrong. It's you who need to show them the right places where they can eliminate. Moments after bringing your dog in the house, take him out quickly to the place where relieving is to be done. Never physically punish your pet; it is bad and also it scares away the animal.Dogs love to curl in any warm and cosy place which gives them the feel of a den. Crate should be such a comfy place. When you give him food or water, 10 -15 minutes later you will need to take him out to the place designated for bowel movement. As the pet does eliminate, reward or praise or just shower your affection on him, which will let him know that he did something right and good. After doing this, take him back to crate.Just like the bowel movements are naturally scheduled, so should be the feeding. Feed him at regular schedule and take him on potty tour accordingly.Keep the floors clean using a disinfectant. In case the puppy peeps at wrong place, wipe away the urine or poop that even the smell doesn't stay there. Dogs have a keen sense of smell, if they smell the place of urine they will urinate the place again. This places importance on a particular designated area.

With all these steps taken carefully, you will have house trained your puppy perfectly. After this you can start giving him a free run around house under your supervision.

Reasons Why You Might Want to Use a Dog Boarder

Whether you have one dog, or multiple canines, you might need dog boarding services at some point in you and your canines' lives. Here are some of the reasons you may need to use a dog boarder:

Taking a vacation

You may think that you can just take your dog along when you travel. After all, they say that dogs are man's best friend. But taking your animal on your summer vacation could be very problematic. Here are some of the reasons why you might want to consider hiring a dog boarding service and leaving Fido at home:

Airline travel can be very uncomfortable - and expensive: You may have to deal with extra fees if you have your pet fly with you. And the fees are not the only thing uncomfortable. Your dog may be traveling in a crate in the cargo section of the plane, with no temperature regulation or stimulation. And if the temperature gets too high in the summer, he might not be able to fly back at all.

You may not be able to find a hotel room that takes dogs: Not every hotel or motel will let you bring your pet, and the ones that do may charge a fee for doing so. The fee may even end up being much more than what dog boarding would have been for you.

Car travel is no picnic for dogs: You may think that your dog will happily enjoy car travel, sticking his head joyously out the window. But what if your pooch gets carsick? That is no picnic. Not to mention that your canine could get sick or even die if you leave him alone in your car, even if it is just for a few minutes.

You may still need to board your pet away from home: Let's suppose your dog handles car or air travel swimmingly, and you find a pet-friendly hotel. Even so, you might need to get a pet boarder or dog walking service when you are on vacation, because you don't want to leave your dog in the hotel room all day.

Moving

I once helped a friend move across town, and the move was made even more stressful by the fact that her cat got loose and ran away. We lost hours spending time trying to find her cat. Fortunately, Fluffy eventually returned, but we were all stressed out. So instead of dealing with this stress with a move, there is a better way. Some people may board their dog while they move, to save them - and their pooch - the stress of the move and the possibility of the pooch getting loose.

Hospital visit

Another reason for using dog boarding services is a hospital visit. Whether you have previously scheduled surgery, or an emergency room visit that will lay you up for a while, putting your pet with a dog boarder could save you the stress of worrying about who will take care of him.

Preparing For Your New Puppy

Regardless of whether you're an adult or a child, there is nothing more exciting than bringing a new puppy into the home. However, successfully introducing a new puppy depends upon a good deal of thought and preparation, and there are a number of things that should be kept in mind when getting ready for this new family member. Is the puppy's breed suitable for the situation (a mastiff in an efficiency apartment is probably not the best choice)? Are there children or other pets in the household? Do you understand any potential health problems associated with the breed?

In addition to the above, people sometimes forget that each puppy is an individual living creature with its own personality and needs. Getting a puppy, in most cases, means that you are going to provide a lifelong commitment to this animal, and no one should take this responsibility lightly.

Regardless of the breed of dog you have decided upon, all puppies will need equipment and supplies to keep them healthy and comfortable. Having everything needed on hand when you carry your puppy into the home will help make the period of adjustment smoother and easier on everyone.

Most breeders will give you a small supply of the food that the puppy has been eating. You will probably want to choose your own brand or one that your veterinarian suggests. Get the best quality you can afford - the puppy will not need to eat enormous quantities just to get adequate nutrition, and higher quality foods also contain more meat protein. Meat should be the first item on the ingredient list.

Food and water dishes are a necessity and probably the best type to use are stainless steel - they are easy to keep clean and the puppy won't be able to chew them up. Clean water should be available at all times.

Puppies are extremely active and playful, and your puppy will also be shedding its baby teeth. Have plenty of safe toys on hand and be prepared to spend time playing with your puppy, this will help with the bonding process. Avoid rawhide as it can cause gastrointestinal problems if pieces are chewed off and swallowed. You should never leave toys with the puppy when it is unattended.

A first aid kit for dogs is another item you might want to have ready. Being able to treat relatively minor injuries at home can save a trip to the vet.

Although most people usually use a collar and leash with their puppy, a harness may be a better choice as it keeps pressure off the neck. Be prepared for some possible dramatic activity when you first put the harness or collar on the pup. Our Frenchies threw themselves onto the ground and writhed around as if in agony the first time we put their harnesses on. We paid no attention and they just got up and forgot they were even wearing them.

Hopefully, you don't subscribe to the old idea of putting a new puppy into a box with a towel, clock, and hot water bottle. If you have decided to get a puppy, it is going to be a member of your family and should be treated as such. Your puppy should sleep in your bedroom. You can let the pup right into bed with you, or you can put the pup's bed on the floor next to your bed. The puppy has, up to this time, been sleeping with its mother and siblings, and isolating it in a cardboard box is cruel. If you want to keep the pup in a crate at night, at least place the crate next to the bed so you can reassure the pup during the night.

There will be times when even the best puppy will portray frustrating and destructive behavior. It is completely inappropriate to yell at or strike the puppy. At this early stage in the puppy's life it is easy to use positive reinforcement, combined with ignoring bad behavior, to help the pup develop into a good companion. Obedience training is a good idea, especially with larger breeds, and can help your puppy become confident and calm.

Having Your Pet Spayed or Neutered, is it Cruelty or Kindness?

The perception of animal cruelty as it relates to spaying and neutering of your pet is really a personal view. The Norwegians do not believe in spaying or neutering of either cats or dogs. In fact, it is very difficult to find a vet in Norway who will do the job. Their perception on the matter is; if you monitor your animal and do not let stray thereby enabling it to mate, then you are on your way to having a happy and healthy pet.

Spaying and neutering your pet is considered cruelty in Norway, and this is the culture, it is inhumane they believe. The sight of a dog or cat in pain from surgery is enough to make you not want to have the procedure done. In other countries, like the United States, for example, they believe in spaying and neutering animals to help with population control. Many people will have this procedure done on their pets because they think this is the only way to manage the population. Some pet owners will tell you that it is a way of controlling the animal because it will alter the natural personality of the animal, and make them more docile.

Another set will tell you that they do not mind the many litter of kittens or the puppies running around, because they love animals. The problem is; not enough food to go around. Which is crueler? Neutering and spaying; or having the little darlings starve? Personally, I think we need to manage the population. It is within the best interest of the animal and the owner. The breeding ratio is too much. Can you imagine a cat having 2 litters per year and you can't find homes for them all? What about the dogs having a large litter of 8 or 10 puppies and you can't find homes for them either? What do you do?

The answer is, take them to the shelter if they can't find homes for them either, and guess what, they will be destroyed. This is the harsh reality of the lives of these helpless animals we encourage to populate the place, and then we just discard them in the shelters. It is more humane to have them spayed or neutered than to allow them to have litters that may well be cruelly killed. To be more convinced, just visit a shelter on the day of scheduled executions and you will think differently about this procedure.

Curbing Dog Aggression

Uncontrolled aggressive behavior is one of the major reasons why dogs are either given to animal shelters or put down. All living creatures, have the capacity to act aggressively because it is a survival technique. However, when the dog acts aggressively towards other pets or humans, the behavior must be corrected as quickly as possible. In addition to the possibility of injury to the other party, serious legal ramifications can arise.

Although any pup can growl and bite inappropriately, certain breeds are much more prone to this kind of behavior than others. The size of your pet is also a factor in this and an attack by a Chihuahua will be considerably less serious than an attack by a German Shepherd or Rottweiler. However, any dog that behaves aggressively should first be seen by a veterinarian to make sure that a physical condition, such as infection, cancer, or a thyroid problem, isn't at the root of the behavior.

One of the biggest causes of aggression is fear. The dog in question is acting aggressively precisely because it thinks it will be attacked, and evidently adheres to the old adage, "The best defense is a good offense". If you have gotten a puppy and would like to prevent future inappropriate aggression, the puppy should be socialized at an early age. Because of dog diseases, wait until the shots have all been taken care of and then take your puppy with you to introduce it to different situations.

Dogs that become used to being around other pups and people at an early age will be much less likely to react aggressively in later years. However, even adult dogs can be trained to overcome aggression by careful training and socialization.

Unless you will be able to sequester your aggressive dog away from people and other animals for its entire lifespan, it should be trained to overcome its aggressive tendencies. The safety of others will always be the first consideration, so make sure that the dog is on a leash and is wearing a muzzle during training.

An aggressive pet can be socialized to feel comfortable and calm in the presence of others. It will take time and patience, but even violently aggressive dogs can be turned into good canine citizens in most cases.

In order to do this, you need to enroll your pet in an obedience class and make sure the person conducting the class understands your dog's aggression problem. Learning to obey basic commands is a good way to bring the dog under control in other situations. Take the dog to an area where it will be exposed to people and dogs and keep it to the side. When a dog or person comes near and the dog begins to lunge or to growl or bark, give a sharp tug at the least to redirect its attention. In addition to the corrective action, you will need to reward the dog when it behaves correctly. Have a supply of small treats on hand and be lavish with pets and verbal praise as well when the dog remains calm.

People who love their dogs tend to make excuses for its bad behavior. However, there is no excuse for a dog biting another dog or a person unless the owner is under attack. This sort of behavior can have very serious consequences for both your pet and you. In extreme cases, when someone has actually been killed by an aggressive dog, the owner has served jail time. The owner can also be sued for bites and the offending pup can be ordered to be put to sleep. It is critically important to get your dog's aggression problem under control.

If your dog is acting aggressively towards others, start seeking a solution immediately before the problem gets totally out of hand. You and your best friend will both be much happier.

The Way to Stop Dogs From Being Rough With Children

Although dogs are playful of course, sometimes their playing could bring harmful consequences, especially where children are involved. Thus, if you see a dog will bite or put your kid's hands rolling around in its mouth while playing, you should move in quickly and nip the issue in the bud. However, figuring out how to stop dogs from being rough with children demands discretion so that you don't send an unacceptable message and ruin its life.

Thus, understanding why your dog may demonstrate roughness while having fun with children can help you cope with the situation, with corrective instead of punitive intentions. Unless a puppy is sick or feels threatened, it never means to hurt your child while playing. Actually, a puppy may pick children as perfect playmates since they are similar in size along with other dogs. Even if the dog ends up injuring a kid, it never appreciates any wrong doing on its part therefore, hitting it will be unfair.

The perfect way to deal with a dog's rough play with children centers on discouraging unacceptable behavior and providing other alternatives.

The way to Encourage Acceptable Behavior

Since dogs like to put things in the mouth or bite gently while playing, giving them choices to human hands may be a great way to redirect their excitement. For instance, you might offer your pet dog a chew bone or rawhide while petting it. Young kids will also help in connection with this by offering a proper chew toy while scratching behind a dog's ears.

To ensure you're sending the proper message, encourage acceptable behavior each and every time your dog tends to play rough with kids. Gradually your puppy will get the message that children's hands aren't objects to experience with, bite or put in the mouth. Also, remain consistent in encouraging acceptable behavior to stop confusing your pet.

Discouraging Unacceptable Behavior

To discourage your pet dog from rough play, it helps to demonstrate undesired consequences. Enable your dog discover each and every time it mouths, nips or mounts, there will be bitter consequences because of it.

For example, you can discourage rough play by ignoring your puppy whenever it nips your hand. You may say a firm "NO" at your dog to demonstrate displeasure with all the act by leaving it alone until excitement subdues. The bottom line is that you ought to not carry on having fun with your new puppy regardless if it demonstrates rough behavior. Eventually, your dog learns that you won't provide attention if demonstrates rough play.

The kids also need to learn that it's not acceptable to permit your dog mouth their hands, because it does not bite. Allow them to allow you to discourage inappropriate behavior by not playing roughly with the dog.

Communicate Effectively along with your Dog

Dogs do take orders from humans and you can use this to take care of inappropriate behavior. As an illustration, you can train your pet dog to master by sitting when you say "sit" or stop doing something unacceptable whenever you say "stop". You can utilize such commands whenever your dog tries jump in your direction.

Figure out using a mix of techniques to discourage rough behavior. As an example, in case a dog endeavors to mount you, you are able to command him to, "stop." This has to be followed by an effect, such as turning away until your pet dog has returned to the ground on its four limbs.

Whenever a dog responds positively towards acceptable behavior, a treat will surely help enforce it. You may praise it, provide it with a reward or pet it a little.

Stuff you shouldn't do

It is necessary you emphasize on not punishing your pet dog for planning to play with kids. Thus, avoid hitting, slapping or in any respect inflicting pain on your dog for jumping onto you, mouthing or nipping. Punishing your dog using this method may get it to fear and get away from you. Worse still, the dog may feel threatened and attack in defense.

Discretion is vital in finding out how to stop dogs from being rough with children. Being a pet owner, you understand dogs naturally like to play in the same way kids do. Since normal dogs don't play rough with intentions to harm children, it's important you learn to enforce acceptable behavior through effective communication with your dog. Reward your puppy for "playing nice" and demonstrate consequences for unacceptable behavior without hitting it.

Hopefully this article will be useful to you in stopping your dog from being rough with children. If you wish to understand more about aggressiveness in dogs then perhaps you should read this other article talking about aggressiveness in golden retrievers , although featuring golden retrievers in special, most of is mentioned can be applied to many dog breeds, retrievers in special.

4 Tips on How to Take Care of a Pug to Ensure Their Health

If you have been wondering about how to take care of a pug, then the four tips that follow may prove to be rather useful to you since clearly you want to make sure that your new dog stays healthy at all times. It has to be said that there is nothing complex when it comes to taking care of them, but these next few tips will at least give you something to build on.

1. Clean their face every single week

One of the most important things you can do when caring for your pug is to make sure that their face is kept clean as they are prone to getting their nose into everything and picking up all kinds of dirt and bacteria. The problem with this is that they have folds in their face and it is essential that you get some lukewarm water and some cotton wool and clean in the folds on a regular basis in order to prevent different skin problems from developing and them picking up infections.

2. Look after their coat

As with any type of dog it is important that you look after their coat and with a pug this involves you brushing them a couple of times a week as an absolute minimum and make sure that the brush has stainless steel bristles and always brush the way that the fur grows to get rid of that dead hair and any dirt that may be stuck in there. Do also remember and check for fleas especially during the summer and consider investing in a flea comb to make sure that they do not pick up something that is extremely uncomfortable for them.

3. Clean their teeth and cut their nails

Believe it not, but you should actually look at brushing their teeth with a toothbrush and some special toothpaste in order to make sure that their dental hygiene does not suffer with this leading to them developing various health issues. It is also important that you cut their nails on a regular basis as this will stop them from scratching themselves and breaking the skin as well as making sure that they can walk without any problems because long nails will put a different kind of pressure on the pads of their feet leading to them cracking and causing them pain.

4. Take them for walks and avoid making them fat

Finally, you have to make sure that you do not overfeed them because if they put on weight it can lead to them developing breathing problems and a pug is already prone to this kind of problem due to them having a flat face. Taking them for walks on a regular basis will of course help to keep the weight down, but it will also make their muscles stronger and this can lower the chances of them developing different issues with their bones and especially with their knees and hips.

That is how to take care of a pug in four easy steps and even though there is a bit more to it than just the things mentioned here they do at least cover the basics that should mean that your dog is both happy and healthy. Do remember that there is further help and advice available should you run into problems, but the main thing is to relax and enjoy your dog and look forward to having a fantastic relationship with them for years to come.

How to Prepare Your Dog for a Visit to the Veterinarian

Visiting the vet for the first time can be a scary and daunting thing for your dog or pup. They have no idea what it means to go to a vet, so they may become fearful of going somewhere they have never been.

The first thing you do when get a pup is to familiarize them with riding in the car. Get them accustomed to being out with you in the car. If you own a truck, let them get used to being a carrier while driving in the back, or if you prefer they get used to being beside you while you drive them around. Most dogs will get nervous being in the car for the first time while others love the experience.

Do this for a period of time so they will get used to the idea of riding in the car, and will expect to be taken out whenever you need to. When you are ready to take them to the vet, you have no problem with them riding in the car. Always put news paper on the floor of the car in case there is an accident. They will get accustomed to the newspaper and do their business on it. If you are taking them in a cage, then do the same thing for the floor of the cage. They will automatically do their business there on the paper. Make sure you take your pup or dog to do their business before you go out as nervousness will cause them to go out in the vehicle. The newspaper is just a precaution.

Planning is important as you do not want to have any unforeseen incidents.

If the pup or dog were owned by someone before you, then they have their medical history? If you are the only owner, then everything is new. The vet will start your pup on their regimen of shots for de worming, you will be advised what to feed and how much for their age and weight. All the things you will need to know, your vet will inform you.

A Review of The Invisible Fence

Chubby I have a pet dog, named him Buddy, he is a Labrador although not entirely, he loves the outdoors and by love I'm not just exaggerating. Since he was a pup he was usually tied outside of the door, because we only had a small home and well, we didnt have enough space. And although he wasnt tied anymore when he grew up he was mostly within the limits of our fence, and this frustrated him a lot, and on every chance he would get, either by us or other people visiting our home, he would always try to get out and when he does, that dog doesnt come home until his tongue would be hanging out. It's quite annoying especially when he is supposed to be our guard dog, but I also want to give him a bit of space so he could still enjoy, but I need it to be within our area so he would still be guarding our house and the vicinity. So when a friend of mine heard about my predicament, he suggested I install an invisible fence, I did a little research and I wasn't quite sure I would be able to utilize it in our small area, because for one, it would still be like having a fence and putting my pet inside, and two, our house would then be open to strays and wild animals that are in the area. I asked the homeowner's in our area if I could install an invisible fence within the street and maybe they would want to join in, this way the dogs would still be able to roam around a big area while still being reach if ever we would need to call on our pets. Some agreed and some were skeptical, but those who agreed were not so sure about using the system itself, so I told I would test the said system and if they ever change their minds they 'll tell me. For anyone of you who do not know what an invisible fence is or how it works, a wire is buried under an area which sends signals to a collar, the collar is worn by your pet, when he is nearing the fence the wire will send a signal to the collar which will then make a sound as a warning, if the pet goes beyond the fence the collar will then give a mild shock, which the dog will feel as something equivalent to our back pains. So last July I called up the people who would come install the invisible fence system, after a few hours it was ready. I took Buddy out, but with a leash, and got him slowly acquianted with the fence, it was a bit difficult at first since whenever we got out he would want to run away, but after a few days I got him to understand his boundaries, I got him near the fence which would make the collar sound and that already gave him the idea, like how we would tell him not to go out. When I finally let him off the leash, he happily roamed around the street, of course there are times that he would try to cross the boundary, but the shock would bid him not to, and there was actually no harm brought to him by the shock, except it makes him feel uncomfortable under the skin, no blood or burns. And now that my dog is happily running around the area without jeopardizing his and our safety, a few of our neighbours have joined in too, now it's like watching kids in a playroom, albeit a bigger one. How about you? Got an energetic dog who wants to run around? Maybe you should try out the invisible pet system yourself. Like I said, I recently installed a dog fence wire for my pet, and it worked great for me! I did some research and found out that there are also other invisible fences that use GPS and do not require wires, but I'm already satisfied with my pet containment system . Rate this Article

Dogs can be allergic to something that you or a groomer put on their skin, ticks or fleas can make them scratch, or even a bacterial infection can cause skin issues. Still other such problems can be caused by food or shampoo. Sometimes it is a more serious problem however, that will need to be treated by a veterinarian. Most dog skin problems can be treated at home, but more serious ones need to be treated by a doctor.

Allergic Dermatitis

Allergic dermatitis is a problem that happens when the dog is allergic to grooming products, food, and anything that is in the environment. A dog that is allergic to pollen rolls in it or get it on their skin will end up with a rash. The sign that dogs have this type of skin problem is when the dog is always scratching. The treatment for the skin problem is to not expose the dog to what they are allergic to, corticosteroids, or a salve or spray to help alleviate the symptoms.

Yeast Infection

Not only can humans get yeast infections, but dogs can also get them too. The signs that a dog has a yeast infection are itchy, discolored skin, and irritated skin. The places where a yeast infection usually shows up at are the paws and ears. A yeast infection is easy to spot and can be treated easily with topical creams that your veterinarian can prescribe. If the cream does not work, the veterinarian can also prescribe oral medications.

Impetigo

Impetigo is most common in puppies and the symptoms are blisters that are pus filled crust over when broken. Impetigo will be located on the part of the abdomen where there is no hair. This type of skin condition is a bacterial one and can be treated with a topical solution. This skin condition can spread to other areas, but it is not likely that it will.

Acral Lick Granuloma

Also called acral lick dermatitis, this is a skin condition, one of the more common dog skin problems, that develops when the dog or animal also licks the same spot. This is a compulsion of the dog or animal to keep licking the spot, usually the front legs by the paws. The symptoms of this are a raw spot because it cannot heal, and there is also pain along with an itch. The only way to heal the spot is to refrain the dog from licking, which can be achieved using an Elizabethan collar or a topical solution that has a bad taste.

Ticks and Fleas

Ticks and fleas are annoying to dogs as well as their owners. Ticks and fleas can be picked up anywhere outside and can be carried in the home on the dog. Fleas can infest homes and ticks can give dogs and humans Lyme disease. The symptoms of these two maladies include itching, red spots, and blood. To treat fleas, the dog and also the home and outside the home will needed to be treated with a flea killer. Ticks can be spotted with the naked eye and will need to be removed carefully to prevent the head from staying under the skin, causing an infection.

There are many different types of dog skin problems that can come up at any time when you are a dog owner. Be sure to ask your veterinarian what you can do if these conditions do show up. Click here to learn more about treatment options for these dog skin problems.

Understanding the Needs of Your Older Dog

Our dogs are such an important part of our lives that it sometimes comes as a bit of a surprise when our frisky and lively friend becomes less active and begins to show his or her age. The point at which your pet could be considered old varies widely with the breed, although all of them will show signs that they are aging (many of which are similar to human aging).

Your pet's muzzle might begin to become grey. This greying will extend to nearly the entire face as the dog becomes older. Your dog simply doesn't have the get-up-and-go they used to have, and can be reluctant to leave their cozy bed in the morning. Some dogs develop hearing and vision problems as they age. Some even have a form of dementia called canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS), which is similar to Alzheimer's disease in humans with many of the same symptoms.

Cognitive dysfunction syndrome affects the behavior of the dog and results in diminished mental capacity. As with human dementia, it sneaks up little by little as the dog ages, and its early symptoms are often overlooked. One of the first ways that CDS shows itself is that the dog becomes confused in its own yard - it can literally forget how to get back inside.

Dogs with CDS will often begin to urinate and/or defecate in the home. They are not really responsible for this and no punishment should be attached to it, just try to take your pet out more often to use the yard.

Heightened anxiety is another sign of CDS, with the dog becoming nervous and agitated for no reason. Dogs with this condition often have insomnia, or switch their sleeping and waking cycles.

Very often an affectionate dog will become withdrawn and fail to seek out the attention it formerly craved. Sometimes the dog will not even seem to recognize people or other pets.

Our responsibility to our dogs extends throughout their lifetimes and when the time comes that our companions are becoming old, we should take steps to make sure that they stay as healthy and fit as possible. A trip to the veterinarian twice a year to detect any abnormalities is a must, but there are things you can do at home too.

You should provide your dog with the highest quality food possible, especially one designed for senior dogs. Good food will keep the body functioning much better than cheap varieties. You should also take care to keep your dog from getting fat as this will put more strain on the joints and make the dog more likely to develop diabetes.

You need to make sure your older dog gets exercise every day. Scale the level of exercise to the dog's condition of course, but even a short walk or play session can help keep joints from deteriorating. Exercise strengthens the heart and helps keep the body functioning better.

If your dog has become arthritic, use ramps or stairs to allow him to get onto furniture more easily. No dog should sleep on the bare floor, especially an older one, so make sure the dog's bed is comfortable and provide blankets for use on cold nights.

Give your friend plenty of attention and affection which will help to keep him more active mentally. New toys and a regular play session daily can help to minimize the onset of CDS.

Supplements that provide extra vitamins and minerals, and those designed to help build joint strength should be added to the daily diet.

Your dog has probably provided unconditional love and companionship over the years, so taking the extra time and effort to make your older dog comfortable is important not only for him or her, but also for you.

Japanese Spitz - The Fluffy Watchdog With a Heart of Gold

History - There is some disagreement found in the exact origin of the Japanese Spitz. Some experts maintain that the breed is a larger variety of the Samoyed line, but most believe that the origin can actually be found in the European (German) Spitz-type dogs, dating back as early as 500 A.D. At best, the Japanese Spitz can probably claim to be distant cousins with the Pomeranian, American Eskimo Dog, and the Samoyed, even if based mainly on resemblance alone.

However, the first solid history we have on the beginnings of the Japanese Spitz can be found in the early 1900s. In 1920, breeders in Japan brought together several varieties of Spitzes from around the world, starting with the slightly smaller German Spitz, with the intention of creating an even better companion breed. Just after 1945, the final standard for the Japanese Spitz was adopted by the Japanese Kennel Club.

After that, the popularity of the breed really took off! It was brought from Japan to Sweden, then England (becoming recognized by the UKC in 1977), Australia, and the United States. While this fluffy, white snowball is recognized by many Kennel Clubs throughout the world, the AKC is not one. Unfortunately, its strong resemblance to the American Eskimo precludes it from consideration (at least at this time).

Breed Standards - In terms of breed standards, the average height of males is about 37cm/14.5," while females are a bit smaller at 30cm/11.5." If intending to show, the key proportion for the dog is 10:11 (ratio of height at withers to length of body). Average weight range is between 5-7kg/11-15.5lbs. Coat color is only white (the German Spitz comes in a variety of colors). Other characteristics of the breed include a wedge-shaped head, a thick under-layer of the longhaired coat (coat is shorter the lower it gets on the dog), a tail covered with long hair (curling over the back), small ears which are pointed upright, and a slightly-tapered muzzle. The large oval eyes are always dark brown or black, almond shaped, and gently slanted. The nose and lips are also always black.

For any other specifics, you can also contact your local Japanese Spitz breeder.

Energy - While the Japanese Spitz is a very adaptable, intelligent breed, they do not require large amounts of exercise. For that reason, along with their compact size, they make wonderful dogs for almost any environment ranging from small apartments to houses with large, fenced-in yards. They love attention and are extremely playful and happy, but, as with most small dogs (especially the highly intelligent varieties), they can be prone to some mischievous or destructive behavior if left alone for too long without adequate stimulation. This is referred to as "Small Dog Syndrome," and the best treatment for it is the prevention of it! A good dose of daily walks or play should be sufficient to keep your pup happy and healthy. Because of their small size and easy-going disposition, the Japanese Spitz also travels very easily and enjoyably.

Temperament - The Japanese Spitz was developed solely for the purpose of being an ideal companion dog...and it looks like that breeding succeeded! These are very family-centric dogs, and they love to be with their human pack. While they enjoy being with people other than family, it may take a meeting or two for them to not appear "standoffish" or aloof. They warm quickly though! And if you stop to think about it, their way of "observing" a stranger, rather than jumping on them and slathering them with kisses, is a remarkable and desirable trait to most dog owners (who usually have to apologize or restrain their dogs when visitors arrive).

On looks alone, your Japanese Spitz will stand out and get lots of attention, so be prepared. Gorgeous, seemingly smiling, and not outwardly aggressive, the breed becomes more and more comfortable with people and pets alike with early and consistent socialization. Unlike most small dogs, the Japanese Spitz does well with children (especially family), and have been known to join in for a good, energetic play session with the kids. Also unlike some other highly-intelligent varieties of dog, the Japanese Spitz is easily trainable, eager to please, and very obedient. Once you establish the rules, be sure to stick to them (don't let that sweet face weaken your resistance!), though puppies of this breed usually only need to be shown the rules once or twice before they are on the same page with you.

Thanks to their keen ears and alert nature, the Japanese Spitz makes an excellent watchdog. And of course, due to their love of family and pack, the Japanese Spitz is also a very protective breed. They have no problem alerting the pack to dangers or unknown people, though their small size might not go very far in terms of actual protection (they very rarely attack or bite in any regard).

When you combine all of these endearing traits, it's understandable why you may be hard pressed to find older abandoned Japanese Spitz dogs in a shelter or rescue. Indeed, the breed is so beloved by owners that once they become first-time Japanese Spitz owners, they become life-long fans!

Health - Perhaps due to stringent standards when the breed began in Japan, but the Japanese Spitz is remarkably free from most genetic health issues. For the most part, they live long, happy lives of 10-16 years, which also makes them one of the longest-lived breeds! If they do suffer from health issues, they usually revolve around the dislocation of the kneecap (patellar luxation) and occasional runny eyes (due to allergies or small tear ducts, though this is not considered a genetic condition).

Grooming - The long, luxurious coat might suggest one of two things: high-maintenance grooming is required, or the dog will have excellent tolerance to cold temperatures. Oddly, neither is true! While these dogs can tolerate the cold, they would much prefer to be inside, safe and warm with the family. And despite the long, white coat, the Japanese Spitz is actually considered to be a low maintenance breed. The secret lies in the coat's texture. Dirt and mud tend to simply dry and then fall off (or can be easily brushed out). And even though this dog loves to go out in the yard, roll around, and have fun while getting dirty, the breed is fastidious when it comes to keeping itself clean. Like a cat, the Japanese Spitz will lick itself clean! As far as owner-maintenance goes, thanks to their own cleaning rituals, your pup really only requires a bath two or three times per year! The coats do shed once per year, lasting 7-10 days, but the dead hair can easily be combed out.

A Japanese Spitz breed association can provide even more guidelines, tips, and tricks in caring for your beloved dog.

Negatives - Believe it or not, the cuteness factor of the Japanese Spitz can be considered a negative of the breed...only because it helps them get away with some mischief (especially as puppies)! Another negative might be slight standoffish behavior toward strangers...but in the long run, that is probably a beneficial trait (for both the dog owner and the visitor).

Positives - The positives that can be found in the Japanese Spitz are almost endless! You can't even count their fluffy coat against them, since it requires so little grooming! Happy, intelligent, obedient, easily trained, easy to groom, protective, adaptable to all living spaces, not requiring large amounts of exercise, gorgeous to look at, and a world-class companion... what else could you want in a dog? Is it any wonder why the Japanese Spitz is one of the most-loved, most-recommended breeds in the world? Depending on where you live, you may need to search to find a breeder...but your search would be well-worth the trouble!

Choosing a Dog That Fits Your Lifestyle

Other than serious behavioral problems, such as aggression, the reason most dogs wind up in shelters is because their owners find out that they have just chosen the wrong dog for the way they live. Dogs have evolved with humans over the course of thousands, maybe tens of thousands of years, and as they shared our homes and lives, they have been bred to fill specific roles.

Besides the innate personality of the breed, there is also the dog's adult size to take into consideration. That fluffy little St. Bernard puppy that fits so well on your lap now could grow into a 200 pound giant in over a year. If your house or apartment is simply not big enough, at some point your dog is going to outgrow its living space.

Regardless of the breed, all dogs require some exercise during the day. While some breeds can have their exercise requirements met with indoor play or a short walk, other breeds will need to run every day to satisfy their energy demands. Another thing to consider is the grooming needs of the dog; some dogs have a carefree coat that requires no maintenance to keep it looking good, while others (especially those with long hair) will need intensive grooming to keep the coat free from tangles, debris, and external parasites.

If you are unfamiliar with dog breeds in general, and are considering adding a puppy or dog to your life, do some research not only into the different breeds. You also need to determine why you want a dog, and how much time you will have to spend with the dog. Always keep in mind that nearly all dog breeds will want to interact with their humans - dogs have emotional needs, too.

If you are looking for a lapdog or companion, choosing a smaller breed is often a good idea, but make sure you understand the different energy level of different breeds. Jack Russell terriers and Westies are small dogs, but they require enormous amounts of exercise, otherwise they can develop personality problems. Breeds such as French bulldogs, English bulldogs, Chihuahuas, Japanese Chins, and Papillons are all excellent choices as well, although all of these dogs will need a lot of attention from their owners.

Hunting dogs combine great personality with the high energy needed for hunting. Those who enjoy taking to the field and woods during hunting season will want to focus on such dogs as Labrador or Golden retrievers or one of the spaniels, such as English or Cocker Spaniels. A laid back hunting dog that works well even in an apartment is the Clumber Spaniel. Vizslas and pointer breeds also are a good choice for hunters. Remember that these breeds will still need plenty of exercise outside of hunting season so be sure to take them for walks or runs daily.

Many people are worried about home security and will use a dog to guard the home. In one respect, nearly every dog breed is a guard dog, but some breeds are more protective than others. When you looking for a guard dog, you should look for a breed that will be easy to train, passive with the family, and have a defensive rather than an aggressive nature. Dogs like English Mastiffs, Bullmastiffs, and Schnauzers are good with members of the family, but do not possess the hair-trigger attacking instincts of dogs like Dobermans, Pit Bulls, and German Shepherds.

Flock guardian dogs are often important to those who live in rural areas and keep livestock. These dogs tend to be more aloof with people than other breeds and tend to concentrate their attention, and affection, on the sheep or cattle they guard. These dogs can be difficult to train as they have been bred to think independently and are best employed in more isolated situations where they will not have to interact with people.

Being a responsible dog owner isn't restricted to how your dog gets along with other people and animals, it also means that you have chosen a dog that you will be able to take care of properly and that will be able to live out its life with you in comfort and dignity.

How Ticks Can Impact Your Dog's Health?

There is basically no region of the country that can be considered free of tick borne diseases. These diseases can have a serious impact on your dog's life, and being aware that they exist can help you detect symptoms early and get treatment when it will be most effective.

Ticks are active during the entire year in winter-free regions and will appear in colder areas as soon as the ground thaws. Never assume it's too early or too cold to find ticks on your dog. Our Pip even got one from somewhere when there was 2 feet of snow on the ground. Check your dog over after every outing, even if it's only been to the backyard. Catching ticks before they attach to the pet is much easier than prying them off later.

Most people probably think that ticks are insects, but they are actually a member of the spider family. An adult tick has 8 lets, just like a spider, and feeds on the blood of living animals. However, while spiders will form egg cases for reproduction, the female tick itself sometimes forms the egg case - in some tick species, the eggs mature inside the swollen body of the female, which eventually bursts to release hundreds of tick nymphs, while other species simply lay the eggs on the ground. These tiny ticks have only 6 legs and generally feed on smaller animals like mice and shrews until they mature.

Ticks feed by inserting their mouthparts into the flesh of their host and drawing blood out. An anticoagulant is used to keep the food supply flowing, and the bite itself causes extreme irritation including itching and oozing of clear liquid.

Removing ticks from your dog safely is important because they can either leave mouthparts in the skin or regurgitate into victim, opening the possibility of more infective agents entering the dog's body. Use fine tweezers or a special tick removing tool to grab the tick as closely to the skin as possible, and use a slow, but steady motion to draw the tick out. From personal experience, I have found that swollen female ticks will inevitably leave their mouthparts in the skin regardless of how careful I have been, raising the chance of infection.

The types of ticks most dogs and people encounter are the dog or wood tick and the deer tick. There are actually about 90 species of ticks found in the United States, although some have a very limited geographic range.

Tick borne diseases can cause serious illness in dogs, as we found out with our French Bulldogs several years ago. The first to become ill, Iris, was taken to the vet the first day her symptoms of limping and lethargy appeared. A blood test revealed that she had both Lyme disease and Ehrlichiosis. Although she was on the appropriate antibiotic, she lost the use of all 4 legs in 3 days, and was unable to even drink on her own; we had to use a syringe. She ate nothing for over a week until the medicine finally kicked in. She was literally reduced to a loose bag of bones. Primmy and Pip also became ill, but not to as great an extent, and all the dogs recovered after a month of antibiotic treatment.

Ehrlichiosis is also called tracker dog disease and is a legacy of the Vietnam War. Returning dogs used by the military were infected with Ehrlichiosis, and it causes symptoms such as joint pain, high fever, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea. Unless treated, long term damage can occur to the heart and joints.

Lyme disease causes many of the same symptoms as Ehrlichiosis, and the antibiotic used to treat it, doxycycline, is also the same.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is even more serious a disease than the above two, and can be fatal if untreated. Symptoms, again are similar to tracker dog disease and Lyme, but can include skin lesions and cough. Heart attacks can also occur. In addition to doxycycline, tetracycline can also be used to treat it.

Anaplasmosis is yet another serious tick borne disease and this time the infective agents target either the white blood cells or the platelets. This disease causes muscular pain, fever, general malaise, coughing, and diarrhea. Doxycycline is the medicine of choice to cure the dog.

Babesiosis is caused by a tiny parasite, and this one attacks the red blood cells. Anemia is one obvious result as well as red urine, lethargy, fever, and weakness. Unfortunately, treatment for this disease is more complicated than for the others, and often involves a combination of drug therapies combined with blood transfusions in extreme cases.

There are a number of products on the market that are applied to the dog's back that will either kill ticks on contact or hopefully before they are able to infect the dog. Flea and tick collars also offer protection.

Carefully checking your dog after he or she has been outside is also a good way to prevent these diseases. Ticks often wander around for quite a while before settling in for a meal, and disease transmission depends on how long the tick has been attached - it usually takes about 72 hours before enough pathogens enter the system to do harm. You should check with your vet with any concerns or questions regarding tick borne illnesses in your pet.
